I Moved It and Let Them Think They’d Lost It

The folder wasn’t where they expected it to be,

and she knew exactly why.

Clara had picked it up earlier that morning.

Shared space.

Shared desks.

Things moved throughout the day.

It wasn’t hers.

But she needed something from it.

She looked through it.

Took what she needed.

Then set it down somewhere else.

Not far.

Just a different surface.

It felt practical.

Out of the way.

She didn’t think about it again.

Later that afternoon, someone was looking for it.

Checked the usual place.

It wasn’t there.

They asked if anyone had seen it.

Clara recognised it immediately.

The small shift she had made.

There was space to say something.

To explain.

To point to where it was.

Instead, she watched.

They checked again.

Looked around.

Then found it.

Exactly where she had left it.

There was a brief comment.

A remark about misplacing things.

It settled easily.

Clara didn’t correct it.

It hadn’t caused a problem.

Nothing had been lost.

Only moved.

But she noticed something in the moment.

How quickly the explanation had changed.

From action

to assumption.

Now, when something is misplaced, she notices the pause more clearly.

The point where it could be clarified.

Or left.
