Episode 45

I Kept the Money No One Was Tracking

Published on: 8th April, 2026

The balance never quite returned to zero,

and he noticed it before anyone else did.

Marcus shared a joint account for everyday expenses.

Bills.

Groceries.

Small, regular payments.

They both transferred money in at the start of each month.

Rounded amounts.

Simple to manage.

One evening, he saw a small surplus.

A few pounds left over after everything had cleared.

Nothing obvious.

Nothing discussed.

He left it.

The next month, it happened again.

Another small remainder.

Sitting there.

Unassigned.

After a few cycles, Marcus moved it.

A quick transfer into his own account.

It didn’t feel significant.

More like tidying something that didn’t need to sit there.

He didn’t mention it.

The account still worked.

Everything paid on time.

Nothing disrupted.

The pattern continued.

Each month, a small amount remained.

Each month, he moved it.

Quietly.

Over time, it became routine.

Unremarkable.

Years later, they reviewed their finances together.

Spoke about how well the system had worked.

How simple it had been.

Marcus agreed.

There was nothing in the numbers to suggest otherwise.

He never mentioned the transfers.

Not because they mattered on their own.

Only because they had never been defined clearly enough to question.

Now, he leaves the remainder where it is.

Unmoved.

And understands that some decisions are not made once,

but repeated

until they no longer feel like decisions at all.

About the Podcast

confessions.
Daily short confessions about guilt, regret and hidden truths.
Confessions is a short-form storytelling podcast about the things people never planned to say out loud.

Each episode is a single, anonymous confession; moments of guilt, regret, relief, or quiet truth; shared without judgement or spectacle.

These are not dramatic revelations or public apologies. They are ordinary people admitting to choices they still think about, words they never said, or moments that changed how they see themselves.

Episodes are brief and self-contained. A private voice. A single truth. Left with the listener to sit with.
