Episode 32
I Didn’t Return the Call
The phone rang late in the evening,
and she let it stop.
Emma saw the name immediately.
It had been months since they last spoke.
Nothing had ended suddenly.
Just gradually.
Messages became less frequent.
Plans harder to arrange.
Conversations shorter.
Until there was nothing left to continue.
When the call came, she watched it ring.
Then a voicemail followed.
It was brief.
He said he had been thinking.
That he hoped she was well.
That it might be worth talking.
Emma listened to it twice.
She told herself she would call back the next day.
At a better time.
When she had thought about it properly.
The next day passed.
Then another.
The voicemail stayed saved.
Unanswered.
As the days moved on, the moment began to feel more distant.
Less immediate.
Calling back started to feel heavier than leaving it.
The conversation might reopen something.
Or lead somewhere uncertain.
Emma chose not to return the call.
They never spoke again.
The voicemail is still there.
Saved.
Occasionally replayed.
A small opening that was never taken.
